Summary of the Nordic Charismatic Conference in Stockholm Oct 28-31 2010
Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Ecumenism were among the important topics that were discussed at the Nordic charismatic renewal conference in Stockholm last October. From the 28-31 of October 2010, the Swedish Catholic Charismatic Renewal in cooperation with the Catholic diocese of Stockholm and the Friends of S:ta Clara church successfully organized a Nordic charismatic conference in Stockholm.
About fifty participants, mostly from Sweden but also from Finland, Iceland and Norway were registered in advance, for the whole conference and participated fully in seminars and workshops. The evening meeting at St Eugenia on Friday was attended by 120 participants, and that of Saturday by 200 participants. About 400 people were present at the closing ceremony at St. Clara church on Sunday.
Many attendees came forward to be prayed for and many gave their testimonies with regards to how receiving the Holy Sprit has changed their lives and even healed them physically. The Mass on Friday was Celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Anders and concelebrated by the Papal Nuncio for the Nordic countries, His Excellency Emil Paul Tscherring.
At the end of the mass the Papal Nuncio conveyed the greetings of the Holy Father to the conference. In his speech the Papal Nuncio strongly emphasized that the Holy Father and the bishops in the Vatican see the Charismatic Renewal as an important contribution to the total renewal of the church.
Some important themes of the conference were - The Holy Spirit in the personal lives of people, gifts of the Holy Spirit and ecumenism. The title of the conference “Culture of Pentecost” was taken from a speech of Pope Benedict XVI from 2005 where he said “I hope the Holy Spirit will meet with an ever more fruitful reception in the hearts of believers and that the 'culture of Pentecost' will spread, so necessary in our time” [Michelle Moran in ICCRS Newsletter: The Culture of Pentecost]
One of the Key speakers was f Willfried Brieven from Belgium, a former personal secretary to Cardinal Suenens. He talked about the development of the Charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church after the second Vatican council. He also talked about how the Catholic Charismatic Renewal can promote the culture of Pentecost in the Church. The main concept is borrowed from the Acts of the Apostle and is called “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” As a consequence of which, one develops a personal faith, deepens his relationship with Jesus Christ and experiences the release of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit should not be confused with the sacramental baptism with water. According to the catholic faith one receives the Holy Spirit through baptism and confirmation. Catholic theologians usually describe the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as the release or an out flowing of the Holy Spirit that is already living inside you. So that the person will become more fully involved with the gifts of the Spirit he had already received.
The Charismatic renewal movement wants to contribute by helping every baptized member of the church to receive and use this gift. It is not a gift that is reserved for a chosen few or given within the framework of a specific spirituality. It’s a gift that belongs to the whole church.
The contribution of the Charismatic Renewal movement to the culture of Pentecost is by continuing to preach about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and according to f Brieven it has an ultimate goal of getting rid of itself and merge with the whole Church. In his closing speech F Brieven called on every one to go out and be an ambassador for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The conference was an ecumenical one in accordance to the Catholic Church’s view of ecumenism. Charles Whitehead a key speaker from England gave an account of the Catholic church’s approach to ecumenism on the basis of John Paul II’s encyclical “Ut unum sint” The Catholic church is totally over the track for ecumenical work, said Charles, and regards all baptized individuals as brothers and sisters in the church, andrecognizes that even those Christians who do not share the catholic church’s full communion or fellowship have a lot to teach us catholic.
According to the papal encyclica Ut unum sint, catholics are obligated to pray, discuss study and work practically with other Christians. This conference was in fact an example of this kind of interaction. Many of the key speakers came from other Christian denominations. We even got help from other churches like St Clara, The Salvation Army, CityKyrkan and Livets ord in organising the conference.
In one of the Seminars Charles Whitehead came up with ten important principles relating to ecumenical cooperation. Which are the following:
- 1. Accept each other as brothers and sisters.
- 2. Recognize that there are important differences between us.
- 3. Be faithful to what we are.
- 4. Remember that there is more that unites, than that divides us.
- 5. Love one another - the sign of true Christian spirit
- 6. Listen to each other.
- 7. Apologise for mistakes made.
- 8. Realize that there would be problems now and then
- 9. Do as much as we can together.
- 10. Don’t forget that Jesus and the father want to see unity amongs usand that unity is the work of the Holy Spirit

28-31 oktober hölls en nordisk karismatisk konferens i Stockholm men KKS, Katolsk karismatisk förnyelse i Sverige som huvudarrangör i samarbete med Stockholms katolska stift och och S:ta Clara kyrkas vänner.
Ett femtiotal deltagare, de flesta från Sverige men också från Finland, Island och Norge var föranmälda till hela konferensen och deltog fullt ut i seminarier och huvudsessionerpå förmiddagarna. Till kvällsmötena i S:ta Eugenia katolska kyrka kom c:a 120 personer på fredagskvällen, och drygt 200 på lördagskvällen. I avslutningsmötet i S:ta Clar kyrka på söndag eftermiddag medverkade kring 400 personer. Väldigt många kom fram för att fåpersonlig förbön och många vittnade om förvandlade liv, fysiskt helande och nya erfarenheter genom den helige Ande.
Under mässan på fredag där biskop Anders Arborelius och den påvlige nuntien Emil PaulTscherring medverkade framförde nuntien i slutet av mässan en personlig hälsning frånpåven. Han betonade starkt i sitt tal att påven och biskoparna ser den karismatiska förnyelsen som ett viktigt bidrag till hela kyrkans förnyelse.
Viktiga teman på konferensen var den Helige Ande i det personliga livet, de andliga nådegåvorna (karismerna) och ekumeniken.
Konferensens rubrik, "Culture of Pentecost" var hämtat från ett tal av påven BenediktXVI från 2005 då han sade: "I hope the Holy Spirit will meet with an ever more fruitfulreception in the hearts of believers and that the 'culture of Pentecost' will spread, sonecessary in our time".
En av talarna var f Wilfried Brieven från Belgien, tidigare personlig sekreterare åt kardinal Suenens. Han talade om den karismatiska förnyelsens utveckling i Katolskakyrkan åren efter Andra Vatikankonciliet, och han talade om hur den Karismatiskaförnyelsen kan bidra till att främja denna pingstens kultur i kyrkan. Han utgick från en artikel av Michelle Moran, ordförande i ICCRS´råd publicerad i mars-april numret av ICCRS nyhetsbrev som tog upp just detta.
Nyckelbegreppet är det som med en term lånad från Apostlagärningarna kallas "dopet i den helige Ande", vilket får till följd en mera personlig tro, en fördjupad relation till Jesus Kristus och frigörelse av andliga nådegåvor i personens liv. Termen andedop skall ses i bildligmening och ej förväxlas med det sakramentala dopet i vatten. Enligt katolsk tro tar man emot den helige ande i dopet och konfirmationen, katolska teologer brukar beskriva andedopet inte som ett förnyat mottagnade av Anden, men som ett frigörande av den gåva man redan fått, så att personen mera fullt rör sig i och brukar den gåva somredan är given.
Karismatiska förnyelsen vill bidra till att denna gåva tas emot och brukas av varje döpt medlem i Kyrkan, det är inte en gåva som är förbehållen några få eller som utövas inom ramen för en specifik spiritualitet, den är en gåva som tillhör hela Kyrkan. Karismatiska förnyelsen bidrar till Pingstens kultur genom att fortsätta att förkunna dopet i den helige Ande, och enligt f Brieven har den karismatiskaförnyelsen som yttersta mål att avskaffa sig själv och uppgå i kyrkan som helhet. I samband med utsändningen vid avslutningsmötet uppmanade f Brieven alla att gå ut och vara ambassadörer för dopet i den helige Ande.
Konferensen var ekumenisk enligt Katolska kyrkans syn på ekumeniken. Charles Whiteheadfrån England höll ett seminarium där han redogjorde för Katolska kyrkans principiella syn på ekumenik utifrån Johannes paulus II´s encyklika Ut unum sint. Katolska kyrkan ärhelt överlåten åt ekumeniskt arbete, sade Charles Whitehead, och betraktar alla somgenom dopet är grundläggande inlemmade i kyrkan som bröder och systrar i Kristus, ocherkänner att även de kristna som inte delar Katolska kyrkans fulla gemenskap har mycketatt lära oss katoliker. Enligt Ut unum sint är katoliker förpliktigade att be, diskuteraoch samtala, studera och praktiskt samverka med andra kristna.
En sådan samverkan var i högsta grad denna konferens ett exempel på. Flera av talarnakom från andra samfund än Katolska kyrkan, vi samverkade med S:ta Clara kyrka och fick även låna lokaler från Frälsningsarméns citykår och Citykyrkan, och Livets ord i Uppsala hjälpte oss med tolkar och på flera andra sätt.
I sitt seminarium nämnde Charles Whitehead tio viktiga grundsatser rörande ekumeniskt samarbete. En viktig grund är att samarbetet bygger på ömsesidig respekt och att vi inte skall förlora vår egen samfundsidentitet. Det handlar om att vara hängivna åt själva uppgiften, att vara öppen för och respektera andra kristna, men exakt hur en framtida struturell enhet skall se ut är inte vår sak att förutsäga, det är en uppgift för den helige Ande som leder alla kristna mot samma gemensamma mål.
